NEW EDUCATION POLICY 2020
The education system that we have known for decades is now changing. A student who is preparing for UPSC must have taken the Science stream, studied English and other professional subjects. Then, at last, he takes a philosophy subject and is now studying for a job. So what we see is that all resources that he had opted for in the past are of no use to him at present. These resources could have been used by some other students.
Today 95% is considered less marks although it's a very good score in your boards. Still, you may not get the top colleges because the cut - off will rise. We used to think, why are we always divided into three streams Science, Commerce, and Arts. Right? Now if I say that things are going to change... A class 10 physics students will have the option to opt for Pol Science. Can u imagine!!!
If you are going into college then things are going to be comforting you too. May be u are enrolled in any degree for 4 years and due to some reason, you have to drop out after 1st year. Now, in the future, when you come back and you will not have to start from 1st year again, you can continue from 2nd year. If you are leaving from the 2nd year you will get a Diploma degree, 3rd year then a Bachelor's degree and if 4th year then a proper 4 yr degree.
So what's the reason for the change:
The current system is a rote learning one. The one who mugs up more will get more marks. Moreover, The government's goal is by 2035 at least 50% of citizens get higher education. But in the present scenario, it is not more than 25%. Previously, children from 5 yrs to 14 yrs fell under the Right To Education but now children from 3 yrs to 18 yrs fall under the category. Previously students were taught alike till class 10. The system was 10+2. Now it has changed to 5+3+3+4.
So some really interesting things have been done in this sector through the New Education Policy.
Now I will be talking in details:
Student's School Life -
From the age of 3 yrs till he is in 2nd Std. (a total of 5 years), language and basic literacy will be taught to the child. Then 3rd Std to 5th Std will be the preparatory stage, everything will be taught with fun and play. Till 5th class, schools will have the liberty to teach students in their regional language.
6th class onwards coding will be taught. This thing was learnt by most students not before they reached college. Now coding becomes nearly compulsory. Practical knowledge will be imparted as well. Our parents often said, "You are learning Physics but don't even know to change a bulb." From 6th class onward students will get small projects, some practical training, etc. The child will be introduced to the practical knowledge, not those written in books.
From 6th to 8th, a student will be introduced to every subject. He will get to experience Science, Arts, English, Hindi, etc.
After this, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th have been grouped together. The shock that most students got in 11th and 12th will now be absorbed in these 4 years. He will have to choose his own subjects. One can opt for Physics, Pol Science, debating, all of these together. Subject combinations will be as per student's will. One can choose from extra-curriculum also - that includes dance, arts, music, etc.
The system of Board exams will be drastically changed. To lower the importance of board exams, it shall be held in two phases (just like JEE -Mains), the syllabus will be greatly reduced, descriptive questions will no longer prevail, objective questions will be asked, vocational exams may also be held. The objective is that Rote Learners don't get more marks than the ones having real knowledge. Though all about the Board Exams is not yet confirmed, we will get to hear about it soon. It is very much possible that the 2 months of our performance will no more decide our future. the aggregate will be a total of all tests that will be held throughout the year. These tests will be more application-based. Virtual Labs will be introduced as well.
College Life -
Now let's come to College Life. You gave your exams very well, kept subjects of your will, did not have to learn up much, things went on very smoothly, etc. In colleges, there will be an option to keep an extra stream other than your mainstream. Maybe you are doing Maths Honors. Now you will have the liberty to keep any minor subject with it, say for eg. fashion designing. So much liberty!
Credits transfer policy will also be introduced. May be u are enrolled in any degree for 4 years and due to some reason, you have to drop out after 1st year. Now, in the future, when you come back and you will not have to start from 1st year again, u can continue from 2nd year. If leaving from the 2nd year you will get a Diploma degree, 3rd year then a Bachelor's degree and if 4th year then a proper 4 yr degree.
Previously in India, research work could not be done by young researches. Now, under the new policy, a national body has been formed which will be funding your research work. This will be both for Science Students as well as Social Science Students.
Now private colleges will not be allowed to keep the semester fee as per their will.
The same content will be provided for all 8 languages in respective courses. Studying in English only is not compulsory.
** Though The Union Cabinet has granted it's approval to the NEP 2020, no clear indication has been made as of when will this be implemented. Although, it is pretty sure-not in the near future.
**If you have got enough time to read the complete draft published in 2019 then you may read it at NEP 2019 Draft
